WHAT IS THE TOEFL EXAM?
The TOEFL is one of the most widely used English proficiency exams in the world, and your qualification is used as a requirement to obtain academic degrees, conduct exchanges abroad, and even obtain Visas to visit some of the most developed countries.
Here we will explain what you should know about its different modalities, and I will tell you the 12 steps you must follow to have an outstanding score.
The first thing you should know about this TOEFL test
There are 2 types:
International: This is official and has international validity. Whether you want to get a residence visa or study abroad, it is a must. It can be presented in two ways; iBT and PBT (I explain later).
Institutional (also known as ITP): This is in pencil and paper, its validity is only at the national level (sometimes it is only valid in the institution that did it).
There are 2 ways to present it:
PBT (Paper Based): This is the traditional way and is presented on paper.
iBT (Internet Based): It consists of an online exam, and for some time is the most used way to perform this exam.
Examine 5 skills:
- Reading Comprehension: Your goal is to determine your level of compression when reading.
- Listening Comprehension: Measure how well you understand spoken English.
- Speaking: Evaluate your ability to express yourself orally in English. The PBT modality does not include this section.
- Writing: Determine how advanced your writing skills are.
- Structure: Examine your grammar, the way you structure the sentences and use the vocabulary based on the context. This section is extremely important in the iBT.
It is qualified in this way:
|Listening Comprehension||31 to 68|
|Reading Comprehension||31 to 68|
|Writing/ Structure||31 to 68|
|Total:||31 to 68|
Note: The result of each section becomes a percentage, which is added to reach your total score.
|0-30||Low (0-14) Intermediate (15-21) High (22-30)|
|Listening Comprehension||0-30||Low (0-14) Intermediate (15-21) High (22-30)|
|Speaking||0-30||Good (26-30) Fair (18-15) Limited (10-17) Bad (0-9)|
|Writing/ Structure||0-30||Good (24-30) Regular (17-23) Limited (1-16)|
Here are 6 TOEFL preparation tips
1. Get a good teacher
This evaluation has its own logic, its way of structuring things, therefore, to achieve a high qualification, you require more than knowing English, you need to understand its structure, and the best way to achieve this is to have a teacher English expert who will advise you
Ask your teacher to give you a list of all the activities you must do, as well as a study manual.
Ideally, practice on your own and take private lessons in English, learn the technical details of the test and indicate the points where you need to improve.
2. Learn how the exam works
As I mentioned before, the evaluation has its own logic, each question has a specific intention, follows a certain flow. Understanding this process greatly increases your score.
Take your study manual, select 3 questions from each section, now analyze the reasoning behind each of the answers. What skills are you trying to evaluate? In what way are you doing it?
Some things will be easy to discover on your own, in others you will need the help of your teacher.
As you understand the structure of this evaluation well, solve several exercises following the logic you learned. This way you will master it well and you will be able to apply it without problems, even in moments of pressure.
3. Set a goal
When you start your preparation, set study schedules that you will follow weekly, as well as a calendar of the activities you have to do.
This is not a test that you can overcome by simply memorizing answers, since it really measures the level at which you apply your knowledge of the language. Therefore it requires a real effort, and your discipline will be fundamental so that you can overcome this test.
4. Make Mock Exams
A Mock Exam is a test that will tell you the approximate score you will get if you were to take the exam at this time.
I recommend you do one before you start your preparation, another in half, and a final Mock Exam 2 weeks before your evaluation.
The objective is that you recognize the areas in which you need to practice more, and focus your study plan in those points. This helps you optimize your time and progress faster.
Something very interesting is that the Mock Exam is also a good way to measure your progress. And, if you are really following your study program, you will notice surprising results. This point is much more important when you are going to present the TOEFL iBT.
5. Do not blindly trust yourself
Having a high level of English is not enough to get a good grade, you need to be really prepared.
Remember, this test is a measurement tool, therefore there is no standard qualification to decide that you approved, rather it is to comply with what an institution asks of you. For example, for some universities they ask you to obtain 500 points in the PBT modality.
It is very important that you know the requirements that you must meet and perform the test early, so, if you do not get enough points, you will have the opportunity to submit again without pressing.
6. Practice, practice, practice
I know, this advice is a bit obvious, but … Did I mention that you need to practice? In this case there are no magic solutions, shortcuts, or anything that saves you from hard work.
You must make English part of your daily life, speak, write, listen and read in English every day. This you can include to your daily activities. As an example, watch television in English and summarize the show you watch.
Keep a journal in English, take notes of the progress you make when studying, write your thoughts and things happen in your daily life. It is an excellent way to practice your writing and keep track of your progress at the same time.
The good news is that there are many resources at your disposal that can help you. You have to analyze what you have at your disposal and use it intelligently.

Here are 6 Tips for when you are writing the TOEFL test
1. Use your time wisely
Each section has a time limit, calculate what you can take in each question and keep a steady rhythm. If you can not answer a question, mark it to come back to it later.
Our brain works in an interesting way, while you work other answers, it will continue to process the question that you could not solve, and it will probably solve it without wasting time being stuck.
In case you overdo it in a section, do not let your mind wander, you have to keep busy or you will lose your rhythms, I advise you to read your answers again to make sure they are well written.
The important thing is that you stay focused and do not lose the rhythm. This does not mean you should speed up, take the time to analyze each answer and make sure you have the correct answers.
2. Follow the instructions carefully
Pay close attention to the instructions. Before beginning the section make sure you understand them well. Many people fail their examination because they let small details pass, something that could have been avoided if they had followed the instructions carefully.
If the instructions are in writing, I recommend reading them at least twice, review them in your mind and reason them appropriately. If the indications are spoken, leave everything you are doing and listen.
If you prepared properly, you will not have problems with this part, since you should have reviewed this point a few times.
3. Respond systematically
Develop a system to solve the questions, in this way you will be more efficient and accurate when answering.
If we are dealing with multiple options, read the question carefully and think of a possible answer. Then analyze the paragraphs and discard what you think is totally wrong. Tie the remaining paragraphs with your possible answer and you will know which one is correct.
If you are in the section that evaluates your writing, take a few seconds to structure in your head what you write, so it will be easier to express yourself coherently, you can also pay more attention to your grammar. He also uses simple words, so it’s safer for you to write them well, avoiding subtracting points for bad spelling.
The oral part is a little complicated, since it will take into account your fluency, accent and how easy it is to understand you. My best recommendation is to relax and give concise answers. The easier it is to understand what you say, the better the score you will receive.
4. Wear comfortable clothes
Wear the clothes that you feel most comfortable with. This is not a very academic advice, but you will be sitting for more than 2 hours, probably in a classroom, so it will not be easy to concentrate after a while.
To this we could add that you eat something light and go to the bathroom before you start. Everything you consider necessary to carry out your evaluation as comfortably as possible.
Concentration is very important, and believe me, this could make the difference when you have an hour of exam and you are thinking about what you need to go to the bathroom.
5. Answer all questions
This is the most common recommendation you’ll find on the Internet. If you think about probabilities, you will have a greater chance of hitting the simple act of answering.
Although be careful, in situations that you have no idea what could be a correct answer, better leave it blank, many errors could affect your score in a negative way, especially in the oral and written sections.
I know, this can be a bit of a complicated decision, but if you followed all the tips in this guide, then you will probably have to go through this predicament a few times.
When you are relaxed you think more clearly, you are more analytical and you have a more efficient response time. If you think about it carefully this is precisely what you need at the time of making your TOEFL test.
Something that helps me stay calm during an exam, is to order all the place where I will present it as soon as I arrive, so I feel more comfortable and in control of my environment.
If you prepared with time, all you have to do is concentrate, pay attention and relax.
In conclusion, before your TOEFL exam you should:
